Scream 20th Anniversary

Scream
Scream
Twenty years ago today, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's Scream was released. While younger viewers might not be able to appreciate what it brought to the then dead Slasher genre, they should be able to appreciate the fact that it debuted outside of the Top Ten Box Office before climbing its way up to #1 -- a feat few other films, and almost zero horror flicks, have ever accomplished.

While the sequels were nowhere near as good as the original, they featured an endless string of young Hollywood stars and starlets from the 1990s. Many of those went on to appear in numerous horror films and TV shows, as the genre was renewed by the Scream franchise's success.

We covered Scream in-depth on this blog a few years back. Director, Wes Craven, died August 30th, 2015. Scream went on to gross more than $600mn worldwide, cementing it as one of the most successful horror franchises in film history. The antagonist, Ghostface, has since become a staple horror slasher alongside such onscreen luminaries as Jason, Freddy, and Michael Myers.

Although a fifth Scream installment has been rumored, it has yet to appear.

vs. Blood Beach

The B-Raters vs. Blood Beach
The B-Raters vs. Blood Beach
Every year at this time, The B-Raters takes a few weeks off for the summer, and to prepare for the rest of the year. While we're gone, you may find yourself having what professional clinicians refer to as "withdrawals." To combat this, we offer the seasonal tale of a hungry beach and a host of stupid beachcombers: It's The B-Raters vs. Blood Beach.

(Almost) every week, we add another movie riff to our collection, and not all of these are made available to the public year-round. The B-Raters vs. Blood Beach is only available during the summer months, so take a couple hours to yourself and check it out before it's gone!

The First Annual Drink-a-Thon

Sleepaway Camp
Sleepaway Camp
So it's technically our Second Annual Drink-a-Thon, but we got rained-out last year and couldn't do it, and we'd hate to be accused of more false advertising (more on that shortly). That means that this Fourth of July, The B-Raters' First Annual Drink-a-Thon will commence -- during which, we will be viewing Julie Strain in the Andy Sidaris film, Fit to Kill, along with our annual viewing of Sleepaway Camp.

We have an entire schedule filled with films, but we have been unable to coordinate everyone's schedules to allow more of The B-Raters to attend regularly. We've all also experienced changes in living conditions, experienced technical issues, and similar everyday problems that have prevented us from being able to hold the show regularly or release all of the episodes we've filmed.

So we've decided to take a more holistic approach, and only riff films irregularly. This is no guarantee that any more of us will be able to appear regularly, just that the films we do riff will be more fun when we can watch them. They'll still be awful movies, though -- that doesn't change.

So be sure to crack a few with us this 4th of July for The B-Raters' First Annual Drink-a-Thon, starting whenever it begins and ending at least two movies later.

vs. April Fool's Day

The B-Raters vs. April Fool's Day
The B-Raters vs. April Fool's Day
After recording our live events for the last two years, we are amassing quite the collection. Some of the movies we watch are rotated according to season, holiday, or some other element - like The B-Raters vs. April Fool's Day, which is only available for a limited time (every year).

This was one of the first slashers Chris ever saw, so it holds some sentimental value, but it's also a pretty decent flick (plot holes and all). Of course, The B-Raters ruin it by shitting all over the film the whole way through.

Starring Biff and no one else, dare to spend your April Fool's Day with this cult classic.

vs. April Fools Day

The B-Raters vs. April Fools Day
The B-Raters vs. April Fools Day
We're trying to catch-up on our beauty sleep this week, so instead of our regularly-scheduled live event, we offer this old riff of the holiday slasher classic, April Fools Day (1986). As we do not broadcast the actual movies, you may be hard-pressed to find a copy of this film (much less the print we used, which was streamed from Netflix), but you should definitely try! April Fools Day is one of the more clever slasher flicks of the era.

Because it's a seasonal film,
The B-Raters vs. April Fools Day is not available year-round and will only be public throughout the month of March and the first week of April. Likewise, you may be able to find it streaming around this time.

vs. Driller Killer

The B-Raters vs. Driller Killer
The B-Raters vs. Driller Killer
The B-Raters vs. Driller Killer was supposed to have been the season 3 opener, but technical issues conspired against us that week. So instead, we are riffing it for our fourth season. We will actually be revisiting several movies that were either featured previously on The B-Raters or were scheduled to have been.

Just to remind you, The B-Raters has moved to Tuesday nights at 8:00pm, CST. The B-Raters is recorded live and unscripted, then sometimes edited, and made available on The Weirding YouTube Channel.
